Caritas Communities and the non-profit Vietnam American Initiative for Development (VietAID) teamed up to create 12 single-room occupancy units at 1392 Dorchester Avenue in the Fields Corner area of Dorchester.
The wood-frame structure at the site had been vacant and fire-damaged. It was gutted and made handicapped accessible. A ground floor retail space was also included. Construction was completed in 2004 and VietAID became sole owner in July 2005.
VietAID’s mission is to build a strong Vietnamese community and a vibrant Fields Corner through the following measures: promoting civic engagement and community building; developing affordable housing and commercial space; providing small business technical assistance and micro-enterprise development; and offering high quality child care services.
