About Bloomfield Gardens

Bloomfield Gardens is a newly constructed, four-story residential building that exemplifies smart growth, green design and transit oriented goals. Built in the Fields Corner area of Dorchester on a lot that had been vacant for 30 years, the building provides 27 affordable apartments that are close to the Fields Corner subway station and a number of bus stops.

There are 4 studio apartments, 2 one-bedroom apartments, 17 two-bedroom apartments and 4 three-bedroom apartments. Among the outstanding features are bamboo floors, dishwashers, high ceilings, great light from the many windows, and spaciousness. There is a community room with a kitchen for residents to use for socializing, a bicycle storage room, and a laundry room. The building also has 13 parking spaces and outdoor green space.

The building meets LEED-Silver guidelines for energy and environmental efficiency, including drought-resistant plants and a white roof that reduces cooling costs and saves money. It stands 44 feet tall, just four feet taller than the three-story buildings in the area which elevate their first floors six feet above the street.

The non-profit Vietnam American Initiative for Development (VietAID) bought the property with the expressed purpose of adding affordable housing in Fields Corner, near affordable transportation, to aid in the creation of a diverse, lively area. The Massachusetts Housing Partnership provided some of the funds for the project, which went into construction in 2011.
