The Blakely Building
473 Essex Street, Lawrence, MA 01840
Property Manager: Ana Levy
The Blakeley is a charming historic building on a bustling main street in downtown Lawrence, Massachusetts. Interestingly, it’s actually two buildings, one of which is the renovated old building while the other is new construction, perfectly combining old and new.
The new construction was completed in 2008, and it included an atrium to add a welcoming entry. The management office is on the second floor, accessible by elevator, as are all apartments in this six-story property. The 4,267 square feet of commercial space on the first floor is currently occupied by a hair salon, a men’s clothing store, a shoe store and a real estate business.
There are 10 one-bedroom apartments and 36 two-bedroom apartments, for a total of 46 apartments. All are designed to be affordable. Tenants must be eligible under the Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and Community Based Housing (CBH) programs.
Units have individual air conditioning units while common areas have central AC. Heat and hot water are included in the rent; tenants pay for electricity separately.
Among the amenities is a business center for use by residents. The biggest amenity, however, is the easy walk The Blakeley offers to a multitude of clothing stores, shoe stores, banks, restaurants, grocery stores and historic sites.
The Essex Art Center is less than half a mile away. Northern Essex Community College and Cambridge University are both nearby, as is the well-regarded Central Catholic High School. Among the parks are Pemberton Park, O’Neil Park and the Lawrence Heritage State Park. Lawrence is home to a lovely old court house. The American Woolen Mill Housing District is also a stand-out, historic property nearby.
Parking is on a first come basis, but public transportation is very accessible.
