The Foley Senior Residences celebrated its 10 year anniversary with a Summer Block Party, on Saturday, July 20, 2013, during which many people expressed well deserved appreciation for the superb quality of housing and services provided in this affordable community.
The building is an impressive introduction to the 52-acre site that formerly housed the Boston Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospital. The architecture is gorgeous; its long wings seem to reach out to embrace visitors as they travel up the long drive circling the grand front lawn.
That’s where the party was held. There were lots of residents and friends, lots of food and soft drinks, lots of games, music, and dancing. There were tributes to Mayor Thomas Menino, who supported the project a decade ago, and to Vince Droser, the Trinity Financial project manager who dreamed and worked until the project won final approvals from the various city boards and commissions. Portions of the beautiful old hospital campus had been abandoned for more than 20 years before these individuals and their teams brought it back to life and spurred a rebirth of the area. So, the residents were happy, indeed, to celebrate this revival.
The Foley is near the Neponset River, between Lower Mills and Mattapan Square. There are 98 mixed-income studio and one-bedroom units for independent seniors. There are also 18 units in a separate building dedicated to the Entre Familia program, a housing program run by the Boston Public Health Commission.
Foley residents regularly enjoy social and educational events as well as yoga, bingo, and special events like Karaoke nights. Common amenities include a café, dining room, chapel, library, salon, laundry facilities, and a wonderful veranda where residents may choose to sit back, relax and take in the views of the lush landscape.
An MBTA bus stops right out front. Grocery stores, shops, banks, restaurants and places of worship are nearby.
