Marian Gardens is a community of 94 apartment homes distributed among 14 buildings in a quiet area tucked in behind the Lynnway, a major road in Lynn with many retail and service shops. The property is within walking distance of a number of schools, churches, playgrounds and the Lynn Common, making it ideal for families. With 44 two-bedroom, 44 three-bedroom and 6 four-bedroom apartments, there is a long waiting list for these rent-assisted units.
Marian Gardens features its very own park, with a basketball court and a number of play structures. The city in 2012 gave the park the name Ernest Pleasant, a much appreciated Lynn native who has worked as Maintenance Superintendent at Marian Gardens since 1987.
In addition, a separate building houses the management office and includes a community room that can be reserved by residents for special events.
Lynn Common is an easy walk away and is a focal point of the Lynn Common Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places. There is an array of historic house styles in the district. Civic buildings include Lynn Memorial City Hall, a fine example of Art Deco architecture; Lynn Public Library, in Renaissance Revival style; the Lynn Armory, in Romanesque Revival style with a castle-like towers; and St. Stephens Memorial Episcopal Church, also in Romanesque Revival style.
Lynn features a wonderful beach and the magnificent Lynn Shore Drive with a winding, grassy, tree-lined spacious walkway that stretches to Swampscott Beach. It is part of Lynn’s Diamond Historic District, where grand homes line the ocean road and neighboring streets.
For those who like a drier spot, Lynn Woods is just a half-mile away, as the crow flies. It is the second largest municipal park in the Boston area and features wooded trails, ponds, and a number of special events throughout the year. It, too, has been designated an historic district. Lynn is full of historic districts, actually. See Wikipedia, National Register of Historic Places listings in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Among the nearby schools are Lynn Vocational Technical Institute and Washington Community Magnet School for K-5. The public Connery Ice Rink is right around the corner, and the Heritage Museum is not too far, featuring old photos and artifacts of days gone by.
