The words “location, location, location” certainly ring true for Mei Wah Village, located snugly in Chinatown. Besides all the wonderful shops and eateries in the neighborhood, the rest of Boston is a short walk or subway ride away: Beacon Hill, Downtown Crossing, the Theater District, Tufts Medical Center, Park Square, Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the handsome streets and lively bustle of the South End, Back Bay and Copley Square.
The building is a well-proportioned brick building with nice detailing. Completed in 1997, it has 41 PRAC apartments, which means Project Rental Assistance Contract, administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Of this total, there are 5 one-bedroom apartments and 35 studios.
There is a Community Room, where residents often gather for games of Mahjong or to watch current events or movies. There is also a laundry center in the building. An onsite maintenance person keeps the building in tip-top condition at all times.
A loose translation of the words “mei wah,” according to one translator, is “beautiful Chinese gathering.” The translation rings true at Mei Wah Village.
